The U.S. Supreme Court decision to refuse to hear our case concerning Section 1021(b)(2) of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which permits the military to seize U.S. citizens and hold them indefinitely in military detention centers without due process, means that this provision will continue to be law. It means the nation has entered a post-constitutional era. It means that extraordinary rendition of U.S. citizens on U.S. soil by our government is legal. It means that the courts, like the legislative and executive branches of government, exclusively serve corporate power—one of the core definitions of fascism. It means that the internal mechanisms of state are so corrupted and subservient to corporate power that there is no hope of reform or protection for citizens under our most basic constitutional rights. It means that the consent of the governed—a poll by OpenCongress.com showed that this provision had a 98 percent disapproval rating—is a cruel joke. And it means that if we do not rapidly build militant mass movements to overthrow corporate tyranny, including breaking the back of the two-party duopoly that is the mask of corporate power, we will lose our liberty.
“In declining to hear the case Hedges v. Obama and declining to review the NDAA, the Supreme Court has turned its back on precedent dating back to the Civil War era that holds that the military cannot police the streets of America,” said attorney Carl Mayer, who along with Bruce Afran devoted countless unpaid hours to the suit. “This is a major blow to civil liberties. It gives the green light to the military to detain people without trial or counsel in military installations, including secret installations abroad. There is little left of judicial review of presidential action during wartime.”
Afran, Mayer and I brought the case to the U.S. Southern District Court of New York in January 2012. I was later joined by co-plaintiffs Noam Chomsky, Daniel Ellsberg, journalistAlexa O’Brien, RevolutionTruth founder Tangerine Bolen, Icelandic parliamentarian Birgitta Jonsdottir and Occupy London activist Kai Wargalla.
Later in 2012 U.S. District Judge Katherine B. Forrest declared Section 1021(b)(2) unconstitutional. The Obama administration not only appealed—we expected it to appeal—but demanded that the law be immediately put back into effect until the appeal was heard. Forrest, displaying the same judicial courage she showed with her ruling, refused to do this.
The government swiftly went to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit. It asked, in the name of national security, that the court stay the district court’s injunction until the government’s appeal could be heard. The 2nd Circuit agreed. The law went back on the books. My lawyers and I surmised that this was because the administration was already using the law to detain U.S. citizens in black sites, most likely dual citizens with roots in countries such as Pakistan, Afghanistan, Somalia and Yemen. The administration would have been in contempt of court if Forrest’s ruling was allowed to stand while the federal authorities detained U.S. citizens under the statute. Government attorneys, when asked by Judge Forrest, refused to say whether or not the government was already using the law, buttressing our suspicion that it was in use.
The 2nd Circuit overturned Forrest’s ruling last July in a decision that did not force it to rule on the actual constitutionality of Section 1021(b)(2). It cited the Supreme Court ruling in Clapper v. Amnesty International, another case in which I was one of the plaintiffs, to say that I had no standing, or right, to bring the NDAA case to court. Clapper v. Amnesty International challenged the secret wiretapping of U.S. citizens under the FISA Amendments Act of 2008. The Supreme Court had ruled in Clapper that our concern about government surveillance was “speculation.” It said we were required to prove to the court that the FISA Act would be used to monitor those we interviewed. The court knew, of course, that the government does not disclose whom it is monitoring. It knew we could never offer proof. The leaks by Edward Snowden, which came out after the Supreme Court ruling, showed that the government was monitoring us all, along with those we interviewed. The 2nd Circuit used the spurious Supreme Court ruling to make its own spurious ruling. It said that because we could not show that the indefinite-detention law was about to be used against us, just as we could not prove government monitoring of our communications, we could not challenge the law. It was a dirty game of judicial avoidance on two egregious violations of the Constitution.
In refusing to hear our lawsuit the courts have overturned nearly 150 years of case law that repeatedly holds that the military has no jurisdiction over civilians. Now, a U.S. citizen charged by the government with “substantially supporting” al-Qaida, the Taliban or those in the nebulous category of “associated forces”—some of the language of Section 1021(b)(2)—is lawfully subject to extraordinary rendition on U.S. soil. And those seized and placed in military jails can be kept there until “the end of hostilities.”
Judge Forrest, in her 112-page ruling against the section, noted that under this provision of the NDAA whole categories of Americans could be subject to seizure by the military. These might include Muslims, activists, Black Bloc members and any other Americans labeled as domestic terrorists by the state. Forrest wrote that Section 1021(b)(2) echoed the 1944 Supreme Court ruling in Korematsu v. United States, which supported the government’s use of the military to detain 110,00 Japanese-Americans in internment camps without due process during World War II.
Of the refusal to hear our lawsuit, Afran said, “The Supreme Court has left in place a statute that furthers erodes basic respect for constitutional liberties, that weakens free speech and will chill the willingness of Americans to exercise their 1st Amendment rights, already in severe decline in this country.”
The goals of corporate capitalism are increasingly indistinguishable from the goals of the state. The political and economic systems are subservient to corporate profit. Debate between conventional liberals and conservatives has been replaced by empty political theater and spectacle. Corporations, no matter which politicians are in office, loot the Treasury, escape taxation, push down wages, break unions, dismantle civil society, gut regulation and legal oversight, control information, prosecute endless war and dismantle public institutions and programs that include schools, welfare and Social Security. And elected officials, enriched through our form of legalized corporate bribery, have no intention of halting the process.
The government, by ignoring the rights and needs of ordinary citizens, is jeopardizing its legitimacy. This is dangerous. When a citizenry no longer feels that it can find justice within the organs of power, when it feels that the organs of power are the enemies of freedom and economic advancement, it makes war on those organs. Those of us who are condemned as radicals, idealists and dreamers call for basic reforms that, if enacted, will make peaceful reform possible. But corporate capitalists, now unchecked by state power and dismissive of the popular will, do not see the fires they are igniting. The Supreme Court ruling on our challenge is one more signpost on the road to dystopia.
It is capitalism, not government, that is the problem. The fusion of corporate and state power means that government is broken. It is little more than a protection racket for Wall Street. And it is our job to wrest government back. This will come only through the building of mass movements.
“It is futile to be ‘anti-Fascist’ while attempting to preserve capitalism,” George Orwell wrote. “Fascism after all is only a development of capitalism, and the mildest democracy, so-called, is liable to turn into Fascism.”
Our corporate masters will not of their own volition curb their appetite for profits. Human misery and the deadly assault on the ecosystem are good for business. These masters have set in place laws that, when we rise up—and they expect us to rise up—will permit the state to herd us like sheep into military detention camps. Section 1021(b)(2) is but one piece of the legal tyranny now in place to ensure total corporate control. The corporate state also oversees the most pervasive security and surveillance apparatus in human history. It can order the assassination of U.S. citizens. It has abolished habeas corpus. It uses secret evidence to imprison dissidents, such as the Palestinian academic Mazen Al-Najjar. It employs the Espionage Act to criminalize those who expose abuses of power. A ruling elite that accrues for itself this kind of total power, history has shown, eventually uses it.
As for symptoms: VIVID WEIRD WACKY dreams. Headache, muscle aches, tinnitus/ ringing (screeching!) in the ears, nausea and — does anyone else get constipated when this stuff happens? Both me and my animals do. At least painful intestinal cramps.

Will the Anthropocene last for only 100 years?
CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere have now risen to levels well above the 400 parts per million (ppm), as illustrated by the graph below, from keelingcurve.ucsd.edu. This 400 ppm is 143% the pre-industrial peak level of 280 ppm.
In a fascinating lecture, Dr Jan Zalasiewicz suggests that the Anthropocene started around 1950, when levels of greenhouse gases started to rise exponentially, in line with the rise of fossil fuel use, as also illustrated by the image below.
Importantly, methane levels have risen even more strongly than carbon dioxide levels. As the image at the top of this post shows, the current methane level is 250% its pre-industrial peak level, i.e. 1100 ppb above the pre-industrial peak level of 700 ppb. Histrically, methane has only moved by some 300 ppb between a glacial and interglacial phase of the ice ages. IPCC/NOAA figures suggest that global mean methane levels have been rising by 5 or 6 ppb annually over recent years and there are some worrying indications that the rise of methane levels might accelerate even further.
To obtain mean methane abundance, measurements are typically taken at an altitude of 586 mb, as methane typically shows up most prominently at this altitude. Indeed, mean methane levels were highest at this altitude in April 2013, at just under 1800 ppb. Looking at mean global methane levels in April 2014 at this altitude, one could at first glance conclude that the situation had not changed much, and that 2014 methane levels had merely risen by a few ppb, in line with IPCC data. So, at first glance one might conclude that there may appear to be only a minimal rise (if any at all) in global mean methane levels when taking measurements at lower altitudes.
The image below illustrates this. What should be added is that the analysis used only selected altitudes and only used part of all data. So, further analysis may be necessary to verify these findings.
Importantly, closer examination of above graph shows that the situation is dramatically different when looking at the rise in methane levels at higher altitudes. A huge rise in mean methane levels appears to have taken place, to the extent that the highest mean level is now reached at 469 mb. Overall, the average rise in methane across the altitudes that is highlighted in the image is no less than 16 ppb.
The table below shows the altitude equivalents in mb (millibar) and feet.

As the image below illustrates, this rise appears to go hand in hand with much higher peak readings, especially at higher altitudes. It appears that the additional methane originates from the higher latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere and has over the past few months moved closer to the equator, which is what typically occurs as methane rises in altitude.
As said, there appears to be a 16 ppb rise when comparing global mean methane levels between April 2013 and April 2014. Indeed, the culprit appears to be the rapid rise of methane emissions from hydrates that has been documented by this blog and that I estimated to amount to 99 Tg annually, as illustrated by the image below, from an earlier post.
Without action, it appears that the Antropocene will lead to extinction of the very human beings after which the era is named, with the Anthropocene only running from 1950 to 2050, a mere 100 years and much too short to constitute an era. In that case a better name would be the Sixth Extinction, as also illustrated by the image below, from an earlier post.
In conclusion, it's high time that we start acting as genuinely modern human beings and commit to comprehensive and effective action as discussed at the Climate Plan blog.
In the Midst of Human Culling

Brain, respiratory, and major organ diseases are epidemic, globally. Drought is epidemic, globally. Food has become deadly, globally, and entire food groups are rapidly collapsing, globally. All Pacific Ocean fish and mammals are contaminated, sick and dying in epidemic numbers; some near total extinction. Chickens are sick and dying, globally. Pigs are dying, globally. Salmon are dying. Cows are sick and drugged. Birds and insects are dying in epidemic numbers, globally.
U.S. West Coast produce is dying from drought and water tampering, oranges are dying from “viruses”; corn, soybeans, wheat, canola and other cash crops are inedible for humans and animals, and natural forest berries that feed both humans and animals are dying in epidemic numbers, globally. Forests are burning in the tens of millions of acres, globally. Water is being privatized, controlled, and redirected, globally, and farm and grazing land is being confiscated, globally. Plants and animals, as well as humans, have been genetically altered, globally.
Trafficked humans, children and incarcerated people are replacing wage-based jobs while gardening is criminalized, heating with wood is criminalized, off-grid living is criminalized, and eldership is criminalized. Money has been taken from the masses while the government feeds and houses one-third to one-half of the people living in the “richest” nations in the world, which are also the most bankrupt nations in the world. The same nations have force-drugged the masses with pharmaceuticals while at the same time flooded the major population centers with “recreational” drugs and illegal guns. Addiction is normal, mental illness is normal, sickness is normal, unemployment and poverty is normal, and criminality in society and in government is normal.
Last century, human culling took approximately 250,000,000 lives. This century will take billions and billions of lives if not most. The Chinese are living in near-total deadly air and factory pollution as are Americans and Canadians from geoengineering and radiation poisoning. Cambodia and Viet Nam are still wholly contaminated from Agent Orange and Napalm spraying. The Mid-East is contaminated from decades of war spraying. All of these substances remain air, soil and water-bound, and they are increasing every single day as aerial spraying and radiation leaks are ongoing, globally.
Children are addicted and brain damaged. Elders are addicted and brain damaged. Young adults are dying in epidemic numbers. Human reproduction is collapsing due to enforced vaccines and pharmaceuticals, and cancer rates and liver and kidney failures are epidemic, globally. The mental health pharmaceutical industrial complex is creating unstable drug addicts out of one-quarter or more of the people in western nations, children included, while vitamins and supplements are being outlawed through Codex Alimentarius.
The world’s masses have been redefined as “domestic terrorists”, globally, while war and the death of civilian populations remains the targeted goal of the global military industrial complex.
Schools are privatizing and becoming corporations for specialized and targeted skills, while education for the masses is ending and replaced with incarcerated and “volunteer” free-labor forces.
Seniors are aided in rapid death enforced by insurance corporations, carried out by nurse practitioners so hospitals and physicians are held unaccountable, and euthanasia clinics for the elderly 1) take seniors’ remaining wealth via reverse mortgages, and then 2) carry out the federally mandated “end of life” plan called Alzheimer’s euthanasia/drug overdosing.
Self-protection is rapidly being criminalized, pet ownership is being criminalized, freedom of speech, to assemble, to protest, to have access to information…on and on… is criminalized, while humanity is being systematically and rapidly sickened and eliminated, globally.
Human health has been taken. Healthy air, food and water have been taken. Sobriety has been taken. The ability to earn livings has been taken. Cognitive ability has been taken, and sickness and starvation, globally, is ensuing at the speed of sound.
As all continues to be revealed and humanity finally see it for what it is, we can expect a “global catastrophe” to blame for all the above. Yes, we know that, too, but we may be incapable of fighting back. Sickness and starvation is going to get far worse than anything the world has ever known. The ones who may survive will be necessarily altered humans, but for the world’s masses, the culling rapidly ensues. No doubt, it will be interesting to see who or what is blamed for the near-extinction of humankind and the world’s biological life. Let us hope and pray justice prevails as, clearly, none of the above is by accident.
Climate Engineering Continues to Fuel Planetary Meltdown

The spraying of Earth’s atmosphere with toxic metallic nano particles and unknown other chemicals is getting worse by the day. There is absolutely no plausible denial of this as we have film footage of US military jets, like KC 10 tankers, spraying at altitude.
Even though the skies around much of the globe already look like something from another planet, amazingly many people still have not noticed as they never seem to look up. The power structure had made sure the population has so many distractions that the can not seem to see the dots let alone connect them.
The planet is in meltdown and climate engineering is fueling the fire. Nearly the entire climate science community is blatantly lying by their total omission of the geoengineering elephant in the room, much of this lying is in the form of simple denial. Unfortunately, much of the anti-geoengineering community is has also gone off course by not recognizing the fact that our climate is in meltdown. Though there are many causes of the climate unravelling (geoengineering being a primary factor), at minimum, those who are aware of climate engineering should at least consider the overall warming effect of the atmospheric spraying programs. This is not about Al Gore, its about the reality on the ground.
The global temperature map in the article below should be a stark wake up call to all. The only places that have below normal temperatures based on 30 year averages are the eastern half of the North American continent and a few places in Antarctica, the rest o of the planet is in meltdown. Though we know government agencies lie about everything, here is the paradox in this case. The “official” temperatures (on which maps like the ones below are based) are being falsified to the DOWN side, not the UP side. We are seeing “official high temperatures” for any given day routinely falsified to the DOWN side by up to 5 degrees. What does this mean? The planet is even hotter than this map shows. If you don’t believe this, you will soon. Global climate engineering is making an already bad situation EXPONENTIALLY WORSE, a runaway “greenhouse” effect is already under way.

March 2014 Among Hottest on Record, NASA Data Show
Last month was the fourth-warmest March since modern historical temperature records began in 1880, according to data provided by NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies.
The global mean temperature for March 2014 was about 0.7°C (about 1.26°F) higher than the 1951-1980 average, placing it fourth in line behind 2002, 2010 and 1990 among the hottest Marches on record.
Powering last March’s near-record global temperatures was a “sea” of extraordinary warmth (shown in the map above, in dark and bright red colors) that stretched across much of Eastern Europe and Russia all the way to the western United States, noted weather.com meteorologist Jon Erdman.
“March was indeed cold in the eastern United States, much of Canada and parts of southern South America,” he said. “However, the broader picture showed a sea of warm anomalies from Europe across Russia to Alaska and the western United States.”
Wildfires burned across a large swath of Siberia in early April, Weather Underground’s Christopher Burt pointed out, adding that the southern Siberian city of Chemal soared to a high temperature of 83.7°F on April 2, at least 40 degrees above its average high for the day.
As the NASA-GISS graph below shows, the March temperature anomaly last month was starkest at Earth’s highest latitudes:
It’s worth noting that monthly temperature rankings can change and so records like these should be viewed with caution, NASA climatologist Gavin Schmidt said in an email conversation with weather.com.
The difference between the top six March values are small enough, he pointed out that small differences or new information – such as a different analysis method by NOAA or the U.K.-based Hadley Centre – can change the rankings significantly. That can move a third-place ranking down to a sixth-place ranking or vice-versa, he added.
NOAA, the Hadley Centre and NASA-GISS maintain the world’s three most widely-cited historical temperature databases, all of which feature records that date back to the late 1800s.

What’s With the Weather and Chemtrails?

There’s an aphorism about the weather that goes something like this: “Everyone talks about the weather but no one can do anything about it.” Well, don’t be so sure about that, especially since several means of atmospheric manipulation have become commonplace, if not mainstreamed.
Weather modification has been one of the ultimate prizes for technology to capture, especially those who want to use it as a weapon of war. What? Yes, a weapon of war that has been used in the relatively recent past. Operation Popeye was “a highly classified weather modification program in Southeast Asia from 1967 to 1972” [1] during the Vietnam War.
In December of 2007 Professor Michel Chossudovsky, Founder and Director of the Centre for Research on Globalization (CRG), published an extraordinary paper titled “Weather Warfare: Beware the US Military’s Experiments with Climatic Warfare” wherein he discussed such things as “HAARP was developed as part of an Anglo-American partnership between Raytheon Corporation, which owns the HAARP patents, the US Air Force and British Aerospace Systems (BAES).” [2] Readers will note that two nations’ government-war-machinery-branches are involved: the US Air Force and the British Aerospace Systems. There is more to HAARP (High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program) that involves other nations with “establishments” around the globe.

Just like the 1950s technology ‘phenomenon’ nuclear fission with nuclear energy power plants, HAARP facilities seem to be cropping up all over. We know that nuclear waste cannot be stored safely easily, so what don’t we know about ELF energies.
The scary part about HAARP technology is what it emits into the ionosphere where humans should not be mucking around EXCEPT if they want to accidentally or intentionally cause/steer catastrophic events that can be blamed on Mother Nature or an Act of God like WEATHER!

This little-known Pentagon-sponsored radiophysics project, called the High-Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP), is officially intended to expand knowledge about the nature of long-range radio communications and surveillance using the fluctuating ionosphere – the portion of the upper atmosphere extending from 35 to 500 miles above earth's surface.
The IRI [ionospheric research instrument (HAARP)] is designed to temporarily modify 30-mile diameter patches of the upper atmosphere by exciting, or "heating," their constituent electrons and ions with focused beams of powerful, highfrequency radio energy. A household analogy would be a microwave oven, which heats dinner by exciting the food's water molecules with microwave energy.
Earth-penetrating tomography is a startling potential use of ionospheric heating. The method would work by beaming radio energy into the Auroral electrojet, the curved, charged-particle stream formed at high latitudes where the solar wind interacts with Earth's magnetic field. The radio energy then disperses over large areas through ductlike regions of the ionosphere, forming a virtual antenna that can be thousands of miles in length. [CJF emphasis added]
Such an ELF antenna can emit waves penetrating as deeply as several kilometers into the ground, depending on the geological makeup and subsurface water conditions in a targeted area. Aircraft or satellites stationed overhead would then collect the reflected ELF waves and relay them to computers at a processing station, where subsurface inhomogeneities that trace the outlines of structures such as underground weapons facilities can be imaged. North Korea and Iraq, where buried nuclear weapons labs are believed to exist, would be prime candidates for earth- penetrating tomography surveillance. [3] [CJF emphasis added]
What jumps out to be focused on is “Earth-penetrating tomography” and “Such an ELF antenna can emit waves penetrating as deeply as several kilometers into the ground,…” which beg an obvious question: Can they cause earthquakes?
Chemtrails
Nevertheless, the above is not the only ‘tool’ in apparent weather management. There are chemtrails—those ‘tracks’ laid down by planes deliberately emitting or spraying toxic chemicals and other poisons, especially nano-size particulates and aluminum-coated chaff from which, it is hypothesized, HAARP ELF antenna/rays can bounce off energies to any targeted area.

Not to get a little paranoid on my readers, but there has been a U.S. patent issued that apparently deals with mind control, which some think all the weather manipulation also is involved with. Who’s to say that is factual, except that the patent is “United States Patent 5,159,703, Lowery, October 27, 1992 Silent Subliminal Presentation System, Inventors: Lowery, Oliver M. Filed December 28, 1989.”
“Abstract: A silent communications system in which nonaural carriers, in the very low or very high audio frequency range or in the adjacent ultrasonic frequency spectrum, are amplitude or frequency modulated with the desired intelligence and propagated acoustically or vibrationally, for inducement into the brain, typically through the use of loudspeakers, earphones or piezoelectric transducers. [HAARP is considered a piezoelectric transducer!] [7,8] The modulated carriers may be transmitted directly in real time or may be conveniently recorded and stored on mechanical, magnetic or optical media for delayed or repeated transmission to the listener.” [4]
All the above technological advances probably add to the sum total of weather anomalies and ‘climate change’ Planet Earth has been experiencing in the last ten or so years. Climate change may be regarded as something that has been utilized and programmed for certain controls by vested interests. However, what will weather geoengineers come up with to control all the carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, and hazardous gases released from volcanoes? How about methane clathrates? Moreover, what about sun spots that emit toxic gases and solar radiation directed toward Earth? Furthermore, hasn’t the solar system, the Universe(s), and Planet Earth evolved with sun spot materials over millions of millennia?
If weather geoengineers think they can control the weather – and to date they have been successful in that 20% less sunlight is reaching Planet Earth [5] – how can they control one of the more influential factors in real climate change, which is the inner core of the planet that is iron heating up with the core spinning faster than the outer planet? Is that what’s contributing to melting ice in the Polar Regions? (Source)
Weather geoengineering can bring flooding torrential rain in areas by sending precipitation to mimic ‘Acts of God’, i.e., storms like we experienced in the winter of 2014 plus Arctic cold when a “Polar Vortex” apparently was brought down farther into the U.S. mainland by apparently manipulating the Jet Stream. Most recently, tornadoes throughout the Midwestern and Southern states, plus flooding of Pensacola, Florida, and Alabama (2 feet of rain in just two days [6]), and other strange weather anomalies are being attributed to climate change and Nature.
Former weather buzzwords were “global warming.” They have been abandoned for “climate change” that actually may be a man-made and controlling manipulative-factor that is costing lives; creating horrendous amounts of damage and insurance claims; spawning severe financial hardships; generating losses of food-producing land, crops, and growing seasons thereby impacting food shortages; plus other possible factors – some unknown – that just may be the ultimate ‘surprise’ no one expects from “smart” technology, but is being programmed to look like and being blamed effectively on God, Acts of God, Mother Nature, or climate change.
Collectively, we need to wake up; look up to the skies; research what’s going on, and don’t gullibly accept the fairytales about climate change, which just may be man-made weather anomalies. Everything may not be as it seems, dear readers.
Three of the most important questions I think U.S. taxpayers ought to be asking of each member of Congress are:
- How are all these projects funded?
- Who’s paying for the gargantuan costs these technologies demand?
- Do these projects impact the U.S.’s almost $17 TRILLION debt?
Furthermore, where is the mainstream media on investigating those tracks in the skies that form blanket clouds? Why isn’t Congress having hearings to find out what chemtrails are all about? Why aren’t TV weatherpersons blowing the whistle on what they see on their weather radar screens that look like precipitation but are not? One did: Kevin Lollis (Oregon TV weatherman) reported military aircraft dropping chaff—small bits of aluminum or other things.

Ukraine: IMF – Lose the East and Get More Money
One wonders which U.S. politician or functionary visited Ukraine yesterday. After CIA Director Brennan had visited Kiev the coup government of Ukraine launched an "anti-terror" campaign against federalists in the east. That soon pattered out. Then Vice President Biden visited Kiev and the next day another "anti-terror" campaign was launched but stopped after Russia mobilized some troops and threatened to invade. This morning a third "anti-terror" campaign was launched when some Ukrainian security forces encircled and attempted to storm the city of Slovyansk. Who initiated this?
This attempt soon ran into problems. Civilians blocked or held up (vid) troop movements. But supported by helicopters some troops managed to capture a few outlying road barricades. Then at least two of the helicopters were shot down by MANPADs. It was not expected that the armed federalists had such weapons ready but it is also not very astonishing. When the Soviet Union was dissolved Ukraine ended up with a fully equipped force of some 700,000 men. Today, 23 years later, the Ukrainian military force has some 70,000 men. What happened to all the equipment? Most of it was sold off to third countries in shady deals but a lot was just taken away or sold by corrupt officers to anyone who would pay a decent price. I would therefore not be surprised to see more higher level weapons in the hands of the federalists who include some veterans of the Soviet campaign in Afghanistan and other well trained former soldiers and police forces.
The attack on Slovyansk stopped at the city gates with the city itself still in the hands of the federalists. For now the situation there seems to be quiet. Meanwhile there were clashes in Odessa between pro-Kiev and anti-Kiev rioters.
The IMF, which has approved a huge $17 billion loan to Ukraine, gave an ominous warning. Consider yourself to be one of those ruling Ukrainian oligarchs who hope to pocket significant parts of these loans. What would you think after reading this:
Ukraine is at risk of a prolonged recession and may need an extension of its $17bn bailout should tensions with Russia and unrest in the east of the country escalate, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned.

"A long-lasting disruption of relations with Russia that depresses exports, investment and growth, or a loss of economic control over the east that reduces budget revenue, would require a significant recalibration of the programme and additional financing, including from Ukraine's bilateral partners," it says.
Translation: "Dear oligarchs, screw up the relations with Russia and lose the east and you will get more free money." Such IMF talk is not designed to help with any de-escalation.
I do not expect the coup-government's move on Slovyansk to result in any success. The only gain from it will be more support for the federalists and greater alienation in the east. Anecdotal reports from journalists crossing government checkpoints pointed out that the interior ministry troops used in this government operation were pretty pissed about the orders had received from Kiev. They wonder how fighting against a significant part of the population is supposed to help the country. Then again – they likely did not get the above IMF notice.
Adding: Obama mentor and Russophob Zbigniew Brzezinski seems to push for escalation of the situation as he envisions U.S. weaponized "urban resistance" in Ukraine against an (unlikely) Russian invasion. His rant includes this most hypocritical beauty:

Radicals shooting at people in Odessa’s burning building caught on tape

New video has emerged online which shows a man shooting at the windows of Odessa’s burning House of Trade Unions. At least 39 anti-government activists died in the flames on May 2 in the building besieged and set ablaze by radicals.
A man in the video is wearing a bulletproof vest and is shoots several times in the direction of the burning House of Trade Unions.
Another video of the same man shows him speaking on the phone passionately arguing that he and his people are unarmed, while having to confront armed anti-government protesters. The man introduces himself as sotnik Mykola (“sotnik” is what Maidan group leaders in Kiev call themselves) He also says he was wounded in the leg by protesters, although he doesn’t look hurt in the footage.
Both the videos have gathered thousands of views on YouTube, stirring a wave of indignation at the man’s hypocrisy and his shooting at the people trapped inside the burning building.
Survivors of the fire say they had to barricade themselves inside the House of Trade Unions, to hide from an aggressive mob, which had torched their tent camp.
Radicals then began throwing Molotov cocktails at the Trade Unions building, setting it on fire. Witnesses say that those who managed to escape the fire, were severely beaten outside by the besiegers of the burning building.
“We couldn't go down, we were seeing people from other floors being brought down and then those rioters down there attacked them like a pack of wolves,” a survivor of the fire, who was hiding on the roof of the building, told RT.
Afraid of falling into the hands of radicals, people didn’t leave the House of Trade Unions, where dozens eventually burnt alive, suffocated or jumped out of windows.
The Ukrainian Interior Ministry however offers a different version of events, saying the victims of the violent unrest started the fire themselves, when they began throwing Molotov cocktails from the upper floor.
Multiple videos of the incident, however, show Molotov cocktails flying from outside the building.
Several hundred people rallied overnight in Odessa outside the local police headquarters, demanding the release of the fire survivors who had been detained on May 2.
People claim around 60 survivors of the Trade Unions House are currently being held in jails. The rally participants told journalists that anti-government activists who managed to get out of the burning building were first beaten by nationalist militants outside and then detained by police.
Many of the rally participants were holding pictures of their relatives and friends, who have been missing since clashes broke out in Odessa two days ago.
A day that will live in infamy: The day Odessa citizens were savagely killed
Yesterday – May 2, 2014 – the day that Kiev radicals supported by the US government attacked and burnt to death civilians in Ukraine, is a day which will live in infamy.
Those of us who grew up in the West after WWII believed that supporting anything resembling fascism was unthinkable. The moral degeneration of the US state and its NATO allies since that time is beyond belief. So too is the degeneration of the Washington Post, The New York Times, and other corporate media which have helped to delude large numbers of Americans into believing that Russia, which has killed or attacked no one,is somehow the aggressor in Ukraine.
In reality, and on the ground, the US government – with no mandate from the American people –is supporting the Ukrainian 'government' installed in a coup spearheaded by two ultra-nationalist parties, Svoboda and Right Sector. Now, in actions highly reminiscent of Hitler and his brown shirts, Right Sector oriented hooligans aided by military forces have just beaten with chains and baseball bats, and burned to death in the Trade Unions building, 39 civilians who were engaged in a protest in their own city of Odessa; civilians who were opposed to, and did not recognize, the new radical 'government.'
I assume that if, say, the American Nazi party allied with some billionaires and took power in America, at least some Americans would also resist. They might even propose a referendum, as some eastern Ukrainian cities have, on whether to remain in the country. If you do not believe that Svoboda and Right Sector are Neo-Nazi, or that they do not now have substantial power in the ministries of the military and security apparatus of the new 'government,' just look them up, and look at photos of their leaders and followers with Nazi-style armbands, Nazi-style flags, and Nazi-style badges, and the use of brown-shirt style bully boys, not to mention the leader of Svoboda giving the fascist salute.
The Svoboda leader, Oleg Tyagnibok, whose party now controls key positions in the military and security apparatus of the self-appointed Ukrainian 'government,'is on record as saying the Ukrainians who collaborated with the Nazis during WWII "were not afraid and went into the forest with their automatic rifles to kill Jews, Russians, and other filth.” He has also called for the ''cleansing” of Ukraine's “Russkie-Jid (Jewish) mafia” and praised convicted Nazi mass murderer John Demjanjuk as a “hero.”
Following the surprise attack by the fascist Japanese government on the American naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii in 1941, President Franklin Roosevelt began his speech to the American Congress with the words: "Yesterday, December 7th, 1941 – a date which will live in infamy – the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan."
After that speech, the American government and people joined with the Soviet Union, China, Britain, Canada, and other nations in the momentous struggle to defeat fascism and its attempt to impose its racist ideology, holocaust, and tyranny on the whole world.
Yesterday, the day that US-supported neo-fascists beat civilians with chains and clubs and burned them to death in a Trade Union Hall in Ukraine’s Odessa – this also is a day that will live in infamy.

Odessa Massacre Pushes Ukraine to the Edge. Towards a Larger Destructive Conflict?
Western headlines have attempted to spin into ambiguity the death of over 30 anti-fascist Ukrainian protesters cornered and burned to death in the Trade Unions House in the southern port city of Odessa. The arson was carried out by Neo-Nazi mobs loyal to the unelected regime now occupying Kiev.
Both the London Guardian and the BBC attempted in their coverage to make the perpetrators and circumstances as ambiguous as possible before revealing paragraphs down that pro-regime mobs had indeed torched the building. And even still, the Western press has attempted to omit the presence of Right Sector, the militant wing of the current regime charged with carrying out political intimidation and violence against Kiev’s opponents.
Odessa, north of pro-Russian Crimea, and far west of where clashes are now taking place in eastern Ukraine, has also been a point of contention between Kiev and Ukrainians who refuse to recognize the unelected regime’s authority.
Right Sector, a Neo-Nazi militant group who spearheaded the so-called “Euromaidan” protests, has been visibly operating in Odessa in recent weeks. It’s primary role has been to attack and intimidate political opponents planning to run in upcoming elections. It was therefore already present an well established in Odessa ahead of the attack on the Trade Unions House resulting in dozens of deaths in a single day, and as part of a wider campaign to put down multiplying unrest erupting across the country.
Right Sector can be identified by its members openly wearing Nazi insignia, as well as carrying crimson and black banners. Mobs supporting the Svoboda party are also present among recent clashes, wearing yellow armbands with the Nazi wolfangel symbol upon them.
For NATO – War or Nothing?
The clashes in Odessa in the south and Slavyansk in the east, appear to some to be part of an escalating conflict meant to lure neighboring Russia into a direct conflict with the NATO-backed regime in Kiev. While this is possible, a repeat of the 2008 Georgia-South Ossetia War would most likely take place, with superior Russian forces quickly overwhelming Ukrainian troops and leaving Kiev vulnerable to inevitable regime change.
Immensely unpopular and wholly illegitimate, the regime in Kiev stands little chance in any upcoming election. It is also faced with the self-imposed economic ruination of Ukraine, after willfully accepting IMF conditions which include crippling austerity measures that will only further diminish the regime’s support and stability.
With a socioeconomically hobbled Ukraine still reeling from the loss of Crimea, the “Ukraine” the US and EU had invested in through their “Euromaidan” putsch, no longer exists. With anti-fascist, pro-Russian sentiment running high across what remains of Ukraine (and around the world), and an unpopular regime teetering precariously in Kiev, the West appears instead, intent on burning the country rather than leave it a stable and beneficial neighbor for Russia.
World Affairs Journal has recently lamented in an article titled, “Beyond Crimea: What Vladimir Putin Really Wants,” that:
Ukraine is lost. At least lost as many of us had once imagined it—as a potential member of the European Union and, perhaps one day, of NATO.
This sentiment has been repeated across NATO’s corporate-funded think-tank, the Atlantic Council which recently hosted its “Europe Whole and Free” forum – where the expansion of both the European Union and NATO were the focus. The disruption of this expansion, and perhaps even the threat of its reversal appears to weigh foremost on the minds of Western policy makers.
Creating a disaster along Russia’s borders in Ukraine, while attempting to make progress elsewhere, and thus alleviating itself from the promises it made the regime in Kiev upon its accession to power to “rebuild” Ukraine’s troubled economy, appears to be the current agenda.
Responsibility to Protect?
The United States had used the “responsibility to protect” doctrine as cover for regime change in Libya, and attempted regime change in Syria. All the while it was fabricating atrocities to sway public opinion, it was in reality fueling sectarian extremists who were in reality carrying out the crimes against humanity the West was accusing Libya and Syria of perpetrating in fiction. This formula has been spun around in Ukraine.
Now the West is expending resources to cover up atrocities to prevent the “responsibility to protect” from being invoked against them. The massacre in Odessa would have been marked as a turning point by the West for military intervention had it not been their own proxies who carried it out. Instead, the US has claimed, according to the BBC, that ongoing violence carried out by the regime in Kiev is “proportionate and reasonable.”
With the West not only covering up the atrocities being carried out by the regime in Kiev, but in fact aiding and abetting them, the violence will only escalate further. Beyond Odessa, helicopter gunships, armored columns, and special forces have been sent by Kiev into eastern Ukraine and are attempting to overrun and occupy towns and cities that refuse to recognize the unelected regime. This includes the city of Slavyansk where deaths have been reported on both sides and military aircraft have been shot down.
Ukraine is being pushed to the edge of a much larger and destructive conflict that if started, may be difficult to stop. If the West commits to a proxy war and has been able to mobilize enough militants to carry it out, it can leave Ukraine a destabilized failed state Russia may spend years managing. Russia’s attempts to deescalate the conflict have been met only by belligerence from the West. Its patience, and the patience of pro-Russian factions in Ukraine may be the only factor that helps push Ukraine back from that edge.
America Backed Ukraine Neo-Nazis in the Immediate Wake of World War II

American Government Backed Ukrainian Nazis … Same Group Supported By the Leader of the Protests which Toppled the Ukrainian Government In February
Oliver Stone’s documentary Untold History notes:
Truman approved the creation of a guerrilla army code-named “Nightingale” in Ukraine. Originally setup by the Nazis in 1941, it was made up of ultra-nationalists. They would, as Stone describes, wreak havoc on the “famine-wrecked region where Soviet control was loose, carrying out the murder of thousands of Jews, Soviets and Pols, who opposed a separate Ukrainian state.” The CIA would parachute “infiltrators” into the country as well to further “dislodge Soviet control.”
Sounds nuts, right?
But American historian and former Under Secretary of the Air Force Townsend Hoopes and Rice University history professor Douglas Brinkely confirm:
One group that particularly attracted CIA attention and support was the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), a political-military underground movement that had long fought for Ukrainian independence—first against the Poles in the 1920s when Poland controlled the Ukraine and after 1939 against the Soviets. ‘Though violently anti-Russian, the OUN was itself totalitarian and Fascist in character. as well as anti-Semitic. The Nazis poured money into the OUN after the German invasion of Russia and pretended to support the goal of Ukrainian national independence. In return, a large OUN militia, code-named Nachtigall, or Nightingale, provided local administrators, informers, and killers for the German invaders. Nazi-sponsored OUN police and militia formations were involved in “thousands of instances of mass murders of Jews and of families suspected of aiding Red Army partisans.”

When the Germans were driven out of the Ukraine, many OUN members who had served the Nazis’ police formations and execution squads fled with them, but several thousand retreated into the Carpathian Mountains to fight another day against the hated Soviet government. It was this remaining Nightingale group that fascinated the CIA and was recruited essentially en bloc. To bring its leaders to the United States for training and indoctrination required special bureaucratic exertions, as well as an immigration law permitting the admission of one hundred such immigrants per year, provided the Director of the CIA, the Attorney General, and the Commissioner of the Immigration and Naturalization Service all personally stated that the action was vital to national security.” As one army intelligence officer noted sardonically, one wing of the CIA was hunting Ukrainian Nazis to bring them to trial at Nuremberg, while another wing was recruiting them.

In other words, 70 years ago, the U.S. supported the types of fascists who are now in control of Ukraine.
Postscript: Another little known historical fact is that – in 1997 – a former U.S. national security advisor and high-level Obama policy advisor called for the U.S. to take Ukraine away from Russia.
And almost a month before the Ukrainian president was ousted in February, a high-level State Department official – Assistant US Secretary of State for Europe and Eurasia Victoria Nuland, wife of arch Neocon Robert Kagan – announced plans to promote a “new government” in Ukraine.

The World Bank joins Nestlé in wanting to privatize water, deeming it “extremist” to suggest that those born on this planet have a natural right to clean, potable water. Also commenting on the World Bank’s push for water privatization, Al Jazeera reports:
Its project database for private participation in infrastructure documents a 34 percent failure rate for all private water and sewerage contracts entered into between 2000 and 2010, compared with a failure rate of just 6 percent for energy, 3 percent for telecommunications and 7 percent for transportation, during the same period.
Whether public or private, water supplies are dwindling. In one shocking report from 2012, the US Defense Intelligence Agency’s Community Assessment of Global Water Security states that the global need for water will exceed the supply by 40% in the next 25 years.
- The Ogallala Aquifer;
- Lake Mead; and
- The Colorado River.
The DIA Assessment warns that 36 states already are, or soon will be, facing water shortages. They estimate that California only has a 20-year supply of fresh water left, at current usage.
We’re facing extreme water problems that only a community-driven mindset can solve, not a for-profit corporate paradigm envisioned by the World Bank, Nestlé, Bechtel, etc.
In 2013, the University of Engineering and Technology in Lima, Peru used a neat techno-engineering trick to grab the attention of potential students. They posted a billboard that captures atmospheric humidity, passes it thru a reverse osmosis system, and stores it in a tank for locals to access for free. The five condensers involved provide about 100 liters of water a day, and the whole system cost $1,500.
Even better is the $500 system developed in Ethiopa. Using a completely different and more aesthetically pleasing design, Arturo Vittori and Andreas Vogler invented the Warka Water, a structure that uses local plants, and also extracts about 25 gallons a day. Because no special tools or fabricated materials are required, once the locals understand how to build the interweaving vase-like construction, they can repair as necessary, and pass on the technology to neighboring villages.
Smithsonian explains that every detail of the 30-foot-tall tower has a functional purpose. The outer housing is made of bamboo, strong enough to resist wind gusts while still allowing airflow. An inner mesh net collects dew, steering it toward the bottom collection container. Citing the Smithsonian and other sources, Kevin Samson also wrote a detailed piece on it.
No one’s profiting from the Warka Water Tower, but the $500 investment in, or, rather, donation to “public infrastructure” will water thousands of people in a drought-ridden nation. This is a winning solution that far surpasses Bill Gates’ $2,200 toilet that converts dirty water to potable, and costs even more to operate, putting it out of reach of those who need it.

What if you knew it was such an enormous problem that it has the potential to destroy our crops and trees, the soil they are grown in, our entire water supply, and whole ecosystems – and that if you didn’t act, we could never turn back?
We are not talking about fracking, nuclear energy, or the oil industry. We’re not even talking about climate change.
What if it came into use in an insidious way, just as GMO foods have come into our food supply without our knowledge? What if it appeared to be harmless, but it wasn’t? And what if it were so cleverly woven into our culture that we didn’t even see it anymore? What if it were so masterfully stigmatized and wrapped in controversy that if you thought it strange or concerning, you’d be scorned or ignored?
It sounds like science fiction, but it’s not. It’s happening right above you, and it’s called “geoengineering”.
You can find articles and debates in which scientists are proposing to “dim” the sun to slow down climate change, using a technique called “Solar Radiation Management” (SRM). Their concept is to mimic the dimming and cooling effects of a volcanic eruption and existing particulate pollution made by human activity. However, it has been out of the proposal stage for quite some time, and even though officials will not admit it, SRM is already in full-scale operation.
SRM sounds like a viable solution to slowing climate change, and scientists have repeated how “cheap” it is over and over again. But it comes with a price. In fact, it comes with many.
Global climate engineering/geoengineering programs are radically disrupting weather patterns, disrupting the hydrological cycle (causing drought in some areas, flooding others), destroying the ozone layer, and contaminating the entire planet with the toxic fallout from these atmospheric spraying operations.
Climate engineering programs have been fully deployed for many years. There is a mountain of hard science data and film footage to back up this statement of fact.

Save the Internet! Prevent Mega-corporations from Destroying Internet Freedom
To ensure the Internet is open to all on an equal basis we must act now to prevent mega-corporations from destroying Internet Freedom
Update: Actions every day starting on Wednesday, May 7th, at noon and 5 pm. To Save The Internet, we are building a People’s Firewall against the FCC’s proposed rule that will create a ‘pay to play’ Internet by ending net neutrality. The FCC is located at 445 12th Street, SW, Washington, DC 20554.
If we act NOW, we can ensure a free, open and equal Internet for the 21st Century. On Wednesday, May 15 the FCC will vote on a proposal to end net neutrality and impose class-based Internet discrimination, but we have the power to stop them.
To ensure the Internet we want, we must take action today; and people need to plan to come to Washington, DC beginning next Wednesday to join in a series of escalating protests that will undermine the legitimacy of the FCC leadership and force them to pay attention to the public interest rather than the interests of mega-corporations.
Already more than a million people have written the FCC in favor of net neutrality and the Commissioners are receiving more than 100 calls per day from citizens. They know the public wants a free, open and equal Internet. Now we have to show them we will revolt if it is taken away from us.
The proposal by Obama appointee, Tom Wheeler , a long-time industry lobbyist and Internet profiteer, will put in place a pay-to-play Internet where the wealthiest will have superior service to the rest of us, where big corporations will have faster websites than independent sites and where free speech is stifled by money. The Internet has become the great democratizer of media where independent and social media have flourished and allowed people to create an alternative to the concentrated corporate media. We will not let Wheeler undermine media democratization and turn most of us into second-class Internet citizens.
This is an issue that affects all of us – Internet news sites like this one and other independent media, advocacy websites, community radio, social media, blogging sites and you, who are reading this article on the Internet. Democratized communication depends on the Internet being free and open to all on an equal basis. Wheeler’s proposal will undermine open communication and free speech on the Internet.
The primary driving force for Wheeler’s proposal is profit for a small group of massive monopoly corporations. Corporations like Comcast, Verizon and AT&T see the Internet as a money machine as do Google, Netflix and YouTube, among others. They already make huge profits, profits so large that they can buy domination of government. We need to act NOW to put the public interest first and prevent the plutocrats from invading our Internet commons where we have been free to communicate and create.
The FCC is being Driven off Track
When President Obama ran for office, his position was the opposite of what is now being proposed by the FCC Chairman. In April 2008 during his presidential campaign, Barack Obama took the side of the people saying:
“The most important thing we can probably do is to preserve the diversity that’s emerging through the Internet…something called net neutrality. I will take a backseat to no one in my commitment to network neutrality.”
The New Yorker, in “Good-Bye Net Neutrality, Hello Discrimination,” points out how at a 2008 Iowa forum Obama explained:
“What you’ve been seeing is some lobbying that says that the servers and the various portals through which you’re getting information over the Internet should be able to be gatekeepers and to charge different rates to different Web sites … And that I think destroys one of the best things about the Internet—which is that there is this incredible equality there.”
Obama was right when he campaigned, but he has made the FCC into an illegitimate plutocratic agency that is doing the opposite of what he promised. In essence, he campaigned telling the people what they wanted to hear, but as the President, he has governed for the mega-corporations.
Every current member of the FCC was appointed by Obama and confirmed by the Democratic Party controlled senate. This is Obama’s FCC.
When President Obama appointed Thomas Wheeler as the Chair of the FCC, it was a signal that his administration was taking the free and open Internet into a tiered Internet that favors the wealthy. Many in the Internet freedom community expressed deep concerns about the appointment but were ignored by the Democratic-controlled Senate that confirmed Wheeler.
Wheeler represented the telecom industry in Washington, DC for decades in between stints where he was an investor who profited from the industry. From 1979 to 1984, Wheeler headed the National Cable Television Association, now the National Cable and Telecommunications Association. He worked in the telecom industry for 8 years where he became a millionaire, followed by taking over as head of the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association in 1992 until 2005.
Wheeler went on to become a major Obama fundraiser and bundler in 2008 and 2012. His biography page on the FCC says: “He is the only person to be selected to both the Cable Television Hall of Fame and The Wireless Hall of Fame, a fact, as President Obama joked, that made him ‘The Bo Jackson of Telecom.’” Appointing Wheeler was akin to putting the industry in charge of the future of the Internet. His recent proposal is exactly what the industry wants; and exactly what the people oppose.
The problems at the FCC run deeper than Wheeler; the agency is littered with industry lawyers, executives and lobbyists who have gone through the “pernicious corruption of the revolving door” as Lee Fang describes in VICE. Fang writes:
“The FCC is stocked with staffers who have recently worked for Internet Service Providers (ISP) that stand to benefit tremendously from the defeat of net neutrality.”
Fang describes people who worked for Comcast, TDS Telecom, Verizon, AT&T, industry groups like the Wireless Association (CTIA), the National Cable and Telecommunications Association and the U.S. Telecom Association have been recently hired at the FCC. The executives, lawyers and lobbyists from these Internet corporations and associations have worked against net neutrality for years and now inside the Obama-FCC. The fox is definitely guarding the hen house. The people need to expose these foxes and delegitimize any action they take.
President Obama and the Democratic Party-controlled Senate which confirmed Wheeler and all the FCC Commissioners are to blame for the direction of the FCC. Polls show Obama’s popularity sinking and increased likelihood of the Democrats losing the Senate. If Wheeler’s proposal becomes law, it will be the death knell for Democratic hopes of keeping their Senate majority and also result in big losses in the House of Representatives. Obama’s legacy will include being the President who destroyed the free, open and equal Internet. Unless the Democrats join with the people and act now to stop the FCC, people will stay home or vote against them in the Fall. Obama could call Wheeler today and change the direction the FCC is going.
What Should Be Done?
John Nichols writes in the Nation:
“A free and open Internet is essential to modern democracy. But that freedom and openness will be maintained only if Americans use their great democratic voice to demand it.”
It is up to us to prevent the further corporatization of the Internet and to keep it free, equal and open to all. It will take more than our voices, it will taking our bodies stopping the machine of corporatocracy. What are our demands?
1. Reject the proposal. This is the Obama FCC. Obama appointed three Democrats and two Republicans to the Commission, as required by law. The political apparatus of the Democratic Party needs to demand this proposal be rejected.
2. Reclassify broadband Internet access as a telecommunications service that can be regulated in the public interest. Under President Bush the Internet was redefined as an “information service” limiting the FCC’s ability to regulate in the public interest. This decision needs to be reversed so the FCC can properly regulate the Internet. Wheeler opposes this but said in response to opposition to his proposal that reclassification is on the table.
3. Put in place net neutrality regulations. The Commission should act consistently with President Obama’s campaign position – net neutrality. Acting opposite of what the people voted forundermines the democratic legitimacy of government on the critical issue Internet freedom.
Beyond these initial steps we need to do more to protect the Internet in the long-run. Robert McChesney tells The Real News that the Internet is controlled by a cartel: “We basically have three enormous companies–Verizon, Comcast, and AT&T–and a few other quasi-enormous companies that have more or less divvied up the market for internet service…” The result is the United States, formerly a leader in the Internet, now provides expensive, poor service to Americans:
“By setting up this cartel, what we have in America today is Americans pay much more to get cell phone service, much more to get wireline broadband than people do in most other countries, and we get a much lower service. It’s one of the cruel ironies that here we are in the United States, the country that invented the Internet, the country that in 1999 or 2000 was light years ahead of most places in the world. We were at the top of the list in the quality of Internet service and the percent of the population that was online. And we’ve fallen now, so that depending on the ranking, we rank between 15 and 30, sometimes 35 or 40, on rankings from what you pay, the speed, the quality of the service. And it’s not an accident. This is what happened when very powerful corporations own the government, when they basically have the regulators in their pocket.”
This cartel needs to be broken up; a handful of mega-corporations should not control the communications of hundreds of millions of people. The New York Times editorial board wrote recently that these monoply-corporations exist in large part because of public support, “the viability of those networks are based on decades of public investments in the Internet, the companies’ use of public rights of way and, in the case of some companies, a long government-sanctioned monopoly over telephone service.” They need to be required to act in the public interest first.
By reclassifying the Internet as a telecommunications service, the FCC will be able to regulate it in the public interest. We would like to take it farther and make the Internet a public service by law. Taxpayers developed the technology that has become central to communication in 2014. By allowing corporate domination of this public utility, we are giving them power to minimize our Freedom of Speech in the Internet age.
Chris Ziegler writing for the Verge hones in on this:
“The government is too afraid to say it, but the internet is a utility. The data that flows to your home is just like water and electricity: it’s not a luxury or an option in 2014. The FCC’s original Open Internet rules failed precisely because it was too timid to say that out loud and instead erected rules on a sketchy legal sinkhole that was destined to fail.”
In fact there are community broadband networks already that treat the Internet as a public utility rather than a private profit center. This approach puts the public interest first and recognizes the Internet as a public good.
MuniNetworks has a map showing progress being made toward the Internet as a public utility that includes nearly 400 communities:
– 89 communities with a publicly owned FTTH network reaching most or all of the community.
– 74 communities with a publicly owned cable network reaching most or all of the community.
– Over 180 communities with some publicly owned fiber service available to parts of the community.
– Over 40 communities in 13 states with a publicly owned network offering at least 1 Gigabit services
There is a growing movement to municipalize ownership over the things that are public goods such as energy, water and the Internet. This needs to be made into national Internet policy.
Now Is the Time
Josh Levy a campaign director at Free Press writes that this is the time to launch the biggest campaign the FCC has ever seen. He describes how the Internet has become central to our lives:
“. . . the Internet is an amazing thing. It’s a crucial driver of free speech, innovation, education, economic growth, creativity and so much more. We wake up with it in the morning. We’re on it all day long. And it’s the last place we go before we finally say good night.”
Now that we know the FCC Chair is doing the work of his Internet industry colleagues, the people have to step up and become a firewall against the virus Wheeler wants to release that will threaten to infect the Internet with corporatism and the wealth-based discrimination that it creates.
People are activated, sending hundreds of thousands of emails and petitions and making thousands of phone calls to the FCC. We’ve begun to see elected officials criticizing Wheeler’s proposal. The media, like The New York Times, is opposing the proposal. The Times wrote: “The Internet has been a boon to the economy and to free speech because it is not divided into tiers and is open to everybody in the same way.”
We have to keep building the opposition to an escalating crescendo for the Commission’s May 15 vote. This is a defining moment for communication and Freedom of Speech in the 21st Century. It is up to each of us – reading this on the Internet right now – to get involved. As long-time Internet freedom advocate Harold Feld wrote:
“There’s a lesson here. YOU CAN’T OUTSOURCE CITIZENSHIP. You can’t let ‘the tech companies’ or even ‘the consumer advocates’ or anyone speak for you. Citizenship carries responsibilities that go beyond the ritual of voting every two years. But when citizens wake up and speak up, and speak to each other, they find — to their surprise — they are strong. They find they have power.’”
We have the power to create the Internet we want for the 21st Century. Let’s embrace our power. This is our opportunity.

‘Let my people grow’: 250 cities worldwide take part in Global Cannabis March
One of the biggest marches to take place was in Portland, Oregon, which managed to attract hundreds of activists.
Marajuana lovers across the state are collecting signatures for two 2014 ballot measures, including one to legalize the use of recreational marijuana for adults. The state voted against legalizing cannabis in 2012.
Users of the drug want Oregon to adopt laws similar to those in Washington and Colorado, where marijuana is legal for recreational use.
He says that if the drug is legalized, it will be less expensive and they will be able to learn from the mistakes of others. “We’ll design the price structure to wipe out the black market, so our initiative is written specifically to avoid those kinds of pitfalls that they’re experiencing in Washington and Colorado,” Loney added.
There was a party atmosphere in Portland with musicians playing, people singing, kazoos humming. It was a colorful and entertaining time for one and all.
Even the local police seemed somewhat amused by the cannabis supporters en masse, as they held back the traffic and let the crowds walk through the rain soaked streets and intersections.
Medellin in Columbia saw a huge turnout for the Global Cannabis March. 2013 was the first year that the city held the even and there were thousands on the street for the event a year on.
Colombia and Latin America have some of the laxest marijuana laws in the world. Possession of up to 20 grams of cannabis is legal in Columbia.
The Global Marijuana March has become something of a tradition in the German city of Frankfurt. Users of the drug have met on the first Saturday of May since 1999 to try and get it legalized.
Around 200 turned up on this occasion and they are determined to get the German government to allow full recreational use of cannabis and will not settle for anything else.
Washington Intends Russia’s Demise
Washington has no intention of allowing the crisis in Ukraine to be resolved. Having failed to seize the country and evict Russia from its Black Sea naval base, Washington sees new opportunities in the crisis.
One is to restart the Cold War by forcing the Russian government to occupy the Russian-speaking areas of present day Ukraine where protesters are objecting to the stooge anti-Russian government installed in Kiev by the American coup. These areas of Ukraine are former constituent parts of Russia herself. They were attached to Ukraine by Soviet leaders in the 20th century when both Ukraine and Russia were part of the same country, the USSR.
“Our first objective is to prevent the re-emergence of a new rival, either on the territory of the former Soviet Union or elsewhere, that poses a threat on the order of that posed formerly by the Soviet Union. This is a dominant consideration underlying the new regional defense strategy and requires that we endeavor to prevent any hostile power from dominating a region whose resources would, under consolidated control, be sufficient to generate global power.”
The Wolfowitz doctrine justifies Washington’s dominance of all regions. It is consistent with the neoconservative ideology of the US as the “indispensable” and “exceptional” country entitled to world hegemony.
Russia and China are in the way of US world hegemony. Unless the Wolfowitz doctrine is abandoned, nuclear war is the likely outcome.
Questions Surround Latest Syria School Bombing
Americans, by now, should not be shocked at the level of depravity to which Western governments and their media mouthpieces will sink in order to demonize the government of a target nation. While the historical parallels are plentiful, recent events should serve as enough of a reminder that reports circulating from Western media outlets should never be trusted when concerning the situation on the ground inside a country that is slated for NATO intervention. Indeed, Syria has been witness to this fact time and time again.
Thus, as reports begin to circulate regarding the alleged Syrian military airstrike against a school in Aleppo, it is important to remember the history of the Anglo-European propaganda machine in regards to so many other “masscares” and “crimes against humanity” that have later turned out to be either completely fabricated or twisted in such a way as to represent a narrative that is 180 degrees different from the truth.
With that in mind, mainstream outlets like Reuters are reporting that on April 30, 2014, the Syrian military conducted an airstrike on a school in the Al-Ansari District of Aleppo which resulted in the death of at least 18 people, most of them children.
The pro-death squad organization, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, essentially one man located in Britain, claim that the death toll surrounding the school bombing was 18, while the media wing of the death squads, the Aleppo Media Centre, claimed that the death toll was higher, with at least 25 children being killed.
Videos posted by the death squad forces show bodies strewn about the floor along with blood and debris.
The United Nations apparatus is now falling over itself to condemn the airstrikes with the United Nations Children’s Fund stating that it is “outraged by the latest wave of indiscriminate attacks perpetrated against schools and other civilian targets across Syria."
While indiscriminate bombing campaigns by the Syrian military are certainly not outside the realm of possibility, there are several reasons to doubt the veracity of the claims made by Western media outlets that attempt to imply that Syrian government forces intentionally targeted the school. Indeed, there are also reasons to question whether or not the school was bombed at all. Given the history of the Anglo-European propaganda machine in its rush to war against Syria, we cannot ignore these possibilities.
1.) While mainstream Western media outlets attempt to present the school bombing as if it were the calculated tactic of the Assad government, some level-headed reporters have provided a slightly more sober interpretation of the events in Aleppo.
For instance, Jason Ditz of Antiwar.com writes that the bombing, while the fault of the Syrian government, was not an intentional targeting of the school, but an errant bomb that veered off course. He states,
Underscoring the increasingly inaccurate nature of the Syrian Civil War, a military air strike, involving a barrel bomb, careened off course in a rebel held district of the northern city of Aleppo, hitting an elementary school.
The bomb tore through the school, ripping the side off of it and killing 25 people within, including several children. Multiple strikes hit the Ansari District of Aleppo, though this was the only one reported to have caused deaths.
2.) The source of the reports being paraded across Western screens from the infamous “activists say” school of journalism. “Activists” in this sense, of course, can be translated to mean “death squads” (aka the “rebels”). These “activists” have provided weak information at best, but have provided unsubstantiated as well as outright fabricated and staged information on numerous occasions.
The Ghouta chemical weapons attack scenario stands as one of the more famous instances of “activists saying” that Assad forces fired sarin gas against Syrian civilians while themselves having staged the entire event with captured civilians from Latakia.
3.) There is also the question of exactly how many civilians remain inside Aleppo to be bombed. Aleppo, particularly the rebel-held areas, has witnessed a massive outflux and evacuation of citizens. This is not only because of the fighting and potential attacks by opposing sides, but also because of the savagery inflicted upon the subject populous once the death squad fighters seize power.
Indeed, the New York Times reported in mid-February that hundreds of thousands of civilians had been forced to flee the rebel-held areas of Aleppo.
Even more so, Al-Jazeera reports that rebel-held Aleppo is a “ghost town” with whole neighborhoods having been abandoned.
This is the same situation of Ghouta, where most civilians had left their homes in order to escape the fighting and death squads. Still, the Western media ignored the clear evidence that these attacks had been staged and attempted to portray the Ghouta region as heavily populated with civilians.
4.) In keeping with the tradition of both the terrorists operating on the ground and that of the Anglo-American propaganda outlets, there exists the very real possibility that this attack never actually happened in terms of the way it is being portrayed.
Keep in mind that the collusion of Western governments and the death squads have presented numerous instances of Assad’s alleged cruelty and war crimes that have all turned out to be those of the death squads themselves. The Ghouta chemical weapons attacks, the Houla Massacre, the Khan al-Assal chemical weapons attacks, and many others have all initially been blamed on the Assad government. Evidence to the contrary, however, subsequently emerged.
As in the case of the three specific atrocities mentioned above, reports based on “activists say” and videos provided by death squads were used to justify the possibility of military action by NATO. Indeed, in the case of Ghouta, captives were actually used as stage props in order to pin the attacks on the Syrian government.
Likewise, we must remember the documented cases of photographic tampering that have occurred during the course of the Syrian destabilization.
The image reportedly showing a Syrian orphan child lying between his parents’ graves which was passed around the mainstream media to tug on the heartstrings of Westerners, turned out to be nothing more than an art project that was taken in Saudi Arabia. The child was not even an orphan.
Another photo, showing a child jumping over a row of dead bodies, and also used for war propaganda turned out to be a photograph of Iraq, not Syria.
Likewise, the photo portraying a lost little boy alone in the desert being comforted by UN staff, turned out to be a cleverly cropped photo used to drum up misguided sympathy and promote NATO involvement under the Responsibility to Protect doctrine.
With all of this in mind, it is important to note that another school was bombed in Syria this week. Shortly before the alleged bombing of the Ain Jalout school, a school was bombed by terrorists in Damascus.
Although not widely reported, particularly after the mainstream outlets picked up on the propaganda point of the Ain Jalout school, Tuesday saw four mortar shells fired by terrorists in central Damascus killing approximately 14 people and wounding many others. The CBC reports quotes the Damascus Police Command as having stated that two of those shells hit a school complex.
Even the pro-death squad organization, Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, admitted that the attacks occurred, explaining that the school taught students as young as 14.

Whether or not the bombing in Aleppo was an errant bomb, an intentional strike on death squads holding a military position from the school, or simply never happened, it is imperative that we remember the false narrative that has been provided to the Western public since the beginning of the destabilization.
We must remember the fabricated stories repeated ad nauseum regarding Assad’s alleged atrocities only to later find that it was the Western-backed death squads who were responsible.
In the end, we must observe these events from a logical standpoint and always take whatever comes from NATO media outlets with a large grain of salt.

“I could never happen to me,” you think.
But then it does. You wake up in an unfamiliar place and slowly, you become aware that you’ve had sex. The last thing you remember is that you were having a few drinks with an acquaintance. Did you really black out and go home with him? You weren’t even attracted to him! Nonetheless, you’re embarrassed and ashamed, and feel it must have been your fault.
It happened to me in London 30 years ago. It happened to my niece in L.A. 20 years ago. And it happened to a good friend of mine here in Cuenca just a month ago. She was out with a young man—an acquaintance—someone she hardly knew. Yet she woke up in his apartment thinking, “How could I have blacked out when all I had was a beer and one vodka?”
Andrew Luster, the great-grandson of cosmetics -mogul Max Factor and heir to a fortune, was convicted and sentenced to 50 years in prison for dosing three women with GHB, a drug popular with body builders when it was legal in the 1990s, then taking them home to rape while they were unconscious. Why would someone like Andrew Luster, rich and handsome, stoop to such levels? As my friend remarked, “Such men are cowards.” Most are probably sociopaths on a power play, lacking social skills and empathy.
Here in Ecuador, scopalomine, called burndanga in Colombia and northern Ecuador, is the drug of choice for date rapes. It comes from the droopy flower of the guanto bush that can be seen in abundance around Cuenca—but given the wrong dose, the victim dies.
Local police believe that these types of rapes are underreported. This is likely because the victim believes herself to be at fault, or she fears the police won’t believe her anyway, according to one woman I interviewed.
Young tourist women are most vulnerable, since they’re more likely to go out alone, whereas young Ecuadorian women tend to go out with a group of friends. But one expat woman I know was at a bar and had just a couple of drinks. Her local buddies noticed her lack of coordination; knowing she couldn’t be drunk, they figured she’d been drugged, so they took her home. Apparently, her would-be assailant assumed she’d been alone.
Since scopalomine has no color, taste, or odor, the most popular way to slip the mickey is via a drink. That’s why it’s best to take your drink with you everywhere, or gulp it down before going to the bathroom. Never accept a drink from a stranger. One young expat even warns, “If you’re in a sketchy bar, don’t even take a drink from the bartender! Just get a bottled beer.”
However, in some cases, the powder is blown on people. Some friends of mine had this experience here in Cuenca and went to a hotel restaurant to get over the headache. Fortunately, there were three of them. Criminals know it’s a lot easier to go after a loner—one person in a group is likely to remain lucid. There have even been cases in which a person touches a paper (say, a map from a stranger asking for help) and goes under the spell, getting “scoped.”
In most cases robbery is the motive and you wake up at your own place—with a foggy memory of meeting someone the prior evening—and you realize all your electronics and other valuables have been cleaned out. These robbers often work together in gangs, a kind of organized crime.
Often criminals take victims to banks and ATM machines to withdraw cash. According to police, it is also used to take tourists back to their hotel rooms where criminals take cash, computers, cameras, documents, etc. In most cases, the victims appear to be functioning normally. In one case, a woman victim took $10,000 cash out of her bank account and “willingly” (in an altered state of conscious) handed it to the criminal.
In another case, a woman picked up a rich guy at a nightclub and took him to her home, while her gang cleaned out his house. She also led him to various ATM machines and since he was in a trance state, he readily complied. In another case, a gay man drugged his man of the night (a gay expat) and robbed him while at his home.
In an incident I detail in my book, Expats in Cuenca, a man was lured into a dalliance with a pretty young local woman, took her home, and woke up with all his valuables missing, including the wedding ring of his deceased wife. In another instance, a local man was waiting for a bus to go to work. The last thing he recalled was someone blowing dust in his face. Some people found him unconscious and helped him get to safety, but he’d been robbed of everyuthing he had on him.
The drug incapacitates a person’s reasoning abilities and allows criminals to control the victim. The crimes are most common in Guayas Province (Guayaquil), but are also known to happen in Santa Elena (Salinas and Montanita) and Manibí Province (Manta). They’re not unknown in Quito—and there have been enough of them in Cuenca to fill this article.
As I always tell people, there isn’t more crime in Ecuador, it’s just different. And it pays to be aware.

I struggle to understand Keith’s comments above. It sounds as if “we” (world or US citizenry activating against the “deep state”) should “abandon” all attempts at countering the deep state other than to innovate the new form of activism and essentially “flash mob” individuals and power structure participants… if we are to have any “chance of coming up with the totally new sort of street activist whom we critically need.” It explicitly describes Chris Hedge’s litigation of Hedges vs. Obama as a “waste of time.” Hedges titles his piece “Post Constitutional Era,” but Keith seems to minimize this title by announcing this era’s inception being 1963… then goes about amplifying this very concept in “4th Reich” terminology.
All of this seems troubling by way of implications if not in the very explicit undermining of a genuine force among the “reality based” progressive front. I highly recommend any and all engaged in these issues to watch this short Chris Hedges reflection on “Hope” and explicit denunciation of the “traditional left” as effective vehicle for pursuit of “real solutions” – and he proposes the broad foundation of our inclusive activism.

I deeply hope there is clear acknowledgment within the leadership of the geoengineering front-lines that the notion of suggesting the world abandon the hundreds of fronts we activate, fight, and are up against due to the strategic necessity and required prioritization of geoengineering activism would be ludicrous. THE ONLY REASON WE HAVE THIS DAY TO FIGHT GEOENGINEERING IS DUE TO THESE BATTLE FRONTS BEING ENGAGED HISTORICALLY AND CURRENTLY. Geoengineering needs to be integrated within a world movement of effective activism – clearly, but as we engage… to alienate forces such as Chris Hedges and other movements that don’t “adequately” prioritize and focus on geoengineering… well, seems crazy on the face of it and just as certainly a recipe for a world destined for “total destruction” as the outcomes described by anti-geoengineering leadership.
Embracing and integrating within vast and multiple critical and current concerns seems like required strategy.
